They stay with us

In loving memory of babulya Rena

Our grandmother Rena was a truly remarkable woman—strong, poised, and endlessly loving. She spoke with elegance and wisdom, and her presence carried a quiet dignity. Having endured so much throughout her life, she remained a beautiful example of a devoted wife and mother.

She loved to make us laugh and share stories. She found joy in the simplest things: having tea with friends and family, gathering for holidays, speaking with loved ones on the phone or in person, and even going to the store. No matter how small the occasion, she would dress with care and pride—a beautiful example for us, especially as we grew up in the casual culture of America.

As a mother, she was both kind and strict. Raising three boys in the Soviet Union was no easy task. She followed through on her discipline in ways they never expected. “Don’t wash the dishes well? I’ll break them.” They laughed—until she did. “Don’t wash the floors well? I’ll spill the bucket, and you’ll have to clean again.” They laughed—but she followed through. These stories, while humorous now, reflect her firm and loving approach.

As a grandmother, she delighted in laughter. She was quick-witted, always making clever observations and sharing wisdom in a way that was simple and direct—brief and clear.

Angela and I had the great privilege of living with and being raised by our dear grandmother. She did so much for us, and because of that, our bond is especially deep. We carry with us countless cherished memories.

As we approached marriage, she shared her wisdom on how to be a good wife and build a strong, healthy relationship—advice that remains deeply relevant today. We are profoundly grateful for her sincerity and guidance.

We will miss our calls and visits with her dearly. We find comfort in the beautiful memories that will live on in our hearts. We ask for her forgiveness.

Baruch Dayen Ha’emet. May her memory be a blessing. May her soul have an Aliyah. Please do a mitzvah in her honor (a small act of kindness, lighting Shabbat candles, baking challah with the blessing/offering, etc.).

With love and gratitude to our dear grandmother,
Sveta, Bella, Stan, Vladi, Anna, Angela, Ruben and Vica
