On February 6th, 2022 SAMi: Sephardic American Mizrahi Initiative hosted a networking event in which young Jewish adults met with professionals from various fields, all in one evening.
This event welcomed college students, recent graduates, and those who were interested in advancing their careers from all across NYC. The evening, full of professional opportunities, also celebrated the recent graduating class of the SAMi LIVE Leadership Institute program. The alumni participated in an online campaign where every student hoped to raise $300 and together reach a goal of $10,000. This goal was not only met, but also surpassed, and the money raised was allocated to serving students who identify with, and come from, Sephardic and Mizrahi communities.
Despite SAMi’s young age, they are already succeeding in providing a platform for thousands of college students and young professionals in NYC and around the country. Building their vision across the nation, they are offering programs on 10 college campuses and 4 cities: San Diego, Philadelphia, Miami, and NYC. A just one year old organization prospered in promoting Jewish ideals through the lens of a Sephardic ethos and lifestyle. A sense of pride regarding the attendees unique identity was projected greatly in this event and by the looks of it, this feeling will take over the nation!
The interaction between the young adults and professionals was beautiful to observe. Jews assisting and informing fellow Jews and the atmosphere of the evening emitted values of Kehila (community) and Dugma Eesheet (Role-modeling). Professionals from the community dedicated their time to sharing their personal experiences and utilized their journey to guide others in their future endeavors. From the field of law to cosmetology to politics, attendees gained exposure to many spheres of life – a great privilege for any college student to possess. Leo Yakubov, David Aronov, Eddy Ilyasov, Yelena Kalendareva, Rozeeta Mavashev, Liana Zavo, and the CEO of SAMI, Manashe Khaimov, discussed how they built a name for themselves in our community and proved it was possible to thrive while remaining close with Judaism.
As a recent graduate of the SAMi LIVE Leadership Institute, I learned more about my personal leadership skills, the values of being an entrepreneur, and why philanthropy matters in the world. All of these sessions were connected to Judaism and Jewish texts. I surrounded myself with college students who were of my background and formed lifelong connections. As I was discussing this program with my fellow participants, a mutual feeling of gratitude and a sense of community was present. This event depicted to all that SAMi is essential in our city as it nurtures our unique identity. I can confidently say this initiative will continue to flourish nationwide and build its mission across numerous college campuses.
