Winner of the Gold Medal at
the International Competition in Paris, the Grand Prix in Brussels, and a
Special Prize in Monte Carlo, legendary circus performer and producer Grigory
Popovich is embarking on a major tour across the United States and Canada with
his circus ensemble.
– Hello, Grigory. Can you
tell us about the upcoming tour?
– For the first time since the pandemic and lockdown, we are beginning a grand
tour across cities in the U.S. and Canada. This tour will showcase new acts as
well as the best numbers my partners and I have created over the years. Our
program is titled “Together Again”, and all of us, myself included, have
missed touring and are excited to reunite with our audience. The tour also
marks the release of my new book, My Journey in the Soviet Circus.
As a performer, I began my
career in the Soviet Union, working alongside such luminaries as Nikulin,
Volzhansky, Kio, Oleg Popov, the Durov family, and the Zapashny family. These
masters profoundly influenced me and shaped my approach to the circus arts.
The book delves into the
history of the Soviet circus, the intricacies of circus life, behind-the-scenes
anecdotes, memories of the greats, and both humorous and serious moments from
international tours, festivals, and competitions. These stories are interwoven
with reflections on my creative journey. The book is intended for circus
enthusiasts, connoisseurs, and readers who experienced the Soviet-era circus
when its performers were renowned worldwide.
After each performance,
audiences will have the chance to purchase my book in the lobby, where I’ll be
happy to sign copies and answer questions.
– What can audiences
expect from the show?
– In the past, I presented divertissements—programs consisting of various acts.
This time, we’re offering a full-fledged circus performance with acts woven
into a storyline and overarching concept. I always consider the interests of
all ages, ensuring that my shows are entertaining for both children and adults.
The program will feature many
animals. Alongside beloved acts like “Doggie School”, “Cat Revue”,
and “Animal Railroad”, audiences will meet new four-legged performers,
including a miniature horse named Diamond and a duo of German goats, Kurt and
Helga. Additionally, the show will feature geese, pigeons, parrots, and even
trained white mice. As the lead performer, I will present numerous clown acts
and my unique “Juggler on the Ladder” routine, while young artists will
demonstrate their acrobatic talents. It’s a big and diverse show!
– You have many animals in
your program. How do you manage such a large ensemble?
– Yes, the ensemble is quite unique—over 30 four-legged and winged performers.
I regard them as full-fledged artists, and that’s how I refer to them. They are
integral participants in our shows. I don’t simply showcase animal training; I
create scenes and sketches where the animals perform as characters with
distinct personalities.
I work with their natural
talents and instincts, never forcing them to do anything unnatural or against
their will. My ranch is specifically designed for their needs, with ample space
for walks and even a pool. There’s also a special house for “retired
performers”—animals that have left the stage and now live with us peacefully.
Circus is traditionally a
family business, and I’m fortunate to have the support of my wife, Isolda
Gadjikurabanova, a hereditary circus performer from a family of tightrope
walkers, and my daughter, Anastasia, who represents the fifth generation of
circus artists in our family.
– Thank you, Grigory! Let me take this opportunity to invite everyone to Grigory Popovich’s Circus
performances. Don’t miss this unique chance to bring your children and
grandchildren to the show—and to reminisce about the warm memories of classic
circus performances. There will be plenty of laughter and joy because the
circus is always a celebration. Treat your whole family to this magical
experience!
